PLUMBERS ARE GETTING MORE EXPENSIVE (Save up to $10,000)

Old pipes.  We live in a condominium complex with 60-70 year old plumbing built before garbage disposals became ubiquitous. Today 50% of homes have disposals.

Follow these 5 easy recommendations to save on plumbing expenses.

1. Avoid Flushables which are great for plumbers (who get lots of flushable calls (clogged pipes). The last such flushable event this year caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.
2. Garbage disposal use leads to more frequent plumber visits because the debris settles along the sewage pipe and over time causes backups. If you rent your unit, consider taking the garbage disposal out. Be proactive, save cash.
3. Avoid putting coffee grounds down the drain which also settle along the sewage pipe causing more frequent plumber visits. Dump your coffee grounds in the ivy.

4. Using a kitchen sink "basket" like this helps. ----->
5. Boiled meat is healthier but don't pour the fatty water down the kitchen drain. The fat congeals clogging sewage pipes. Instead, place that fatty water in a bowl in your refrigerator. The fat will form a "crust" layer at the top of the cold water and can be disposed of in the trash.
 6. Print this document for your guests and/or renters. Avoid the $10,000 flooding restoration expense.

Figure 3  Pouring fatty water down the drain is a leading cause of sewer backups. Soap and hot water do not break down the grease; they merely carry it further down the drain where the water cools and oils begin to congeal in the pipes, eventually forming a wall of grease.
